I'm not going to lie I am a lover of a candle, and yes at times I have cleared Clinton Cards of their 70% off Yankee Candle sales before. However on a trip to Selfridges last week, I found my ultimate candles. Andrew and me both decided to have our wedding list at Selfridges, mostly in the food hall but the rest on various skull candles and silver ware.
These bad boys are £80 each and made by D.L & Co. from their Memento Mori range, "named after a Latin phrase that states ‘remember that you are mortal’. A reminder that life on earth is fleeting and we should live everyday to its fullest potential." Buff. They had them arranged in bell jars. I believed that I could recreate this, but bell jars are £40 a go even on ebay, and I cannot find any skull candles as good as this. On the D.L & Co website, they have a black skull with a snake coming out of it, it is truly amazing.
The bigger one without a mandible is £77.50, so I make that £2.50 for a lower jaw, and then they do a set of 5 mini ones for £67.00. I don't think these had quite the same effect for me, I have mini skull candles and although they don't smell as amazing as these do, not as good as having a close to life size anatomically correct skull candle on display.
They had lots of others as well, but these stuck out, the Alexandre Brongniart bust looked amazing, but then for £66.50 it had better look amazing, they had it in lots of other colours too and smelt real good. The Owl Jar was huge, I never really got into the whole owl fetish the quirky girls got into a few years back, but I am really enjoying this jar. Made by Piero Fornasetti, called the "Civetta" which I am told is Italian for Owl. It is £95 though. Then the Mimosa candle. Omg you guys it smells amazing. This is more affordable at £40, made by Diptyque for Selfridges and named after a little yellow bird who is smelly, apparently. I can't really describe smells, hence why I am not a wine taster or smeller for living but I can assure you it smells GOOD.
So although currently on my dining room table we have that huge Yankee cinnamon candle which smells great around the house and, I am not ashamed to say, a bit christmassy, Yankee Candles can GTFO, I want a skull one.
